Spring Break: part 1

We drove down to visit Nene & Papa for Easter Vacation/Spring break.  It was SO wonderful to spend time with family, show Henry the sights, and relax.  The first day we got back in the van and headed down to San Diego.  We have never taken the kids so it was a new adventure for them.  We were reminded that there is SO much to do, so we will probably be heading that way again.  On this trip we decided to tour the AMAZING aircraft carrier, USS Midway.  Wow, we learned so much from the audio tour.  (There were options so the kids could listen to "kid friendly" versions.  I had fun quizzing Drew after each exhibit.  My favorite is to say, "Flying isn't dangerous. . . " then Drew will chime in, "CRASHING IS!!!")  These pictures are in reverse order apparently but I think  you can still get the idea.  Top Gun, anyone?

The Midway is on the left during replenishment -- see how the planes tails hang off the ship and all the wings are folded.

The bridge tour was a guided tour but Kathryn was too short (It wasn't refurbished with new stairs. It still had the old ladders, so she wasn't allowed.  Lloyd, Anika, Andrew, Henry and I were able to go.)

A few views from the deck:

Delusions of grandeur!!! (There are more brain surgeons in the world than pilots able to land on an air craft carrier.)

Cue Top Gun music (and our audio tour did:-)):

 In the brig:

Resting in the coop -- here was the sailors' personal space.  The beds were hinged and all your belonging had to fit in the space under the mattress.
